DRM-Free

This namespace aims to provide Linux compatibility1) tips for running DRM-Free games 100% DRM Free (i.e. not on the steam platform and only on wine). There are a couple of self-imposed constraints (that are pointed out in each article for a game if violated).

  • No External Launchers (ie. no steam/lutris/gog galaxy).
  • No DRM-Circumventing Libraries (i.e. no goldberg).
  • As close to stock wine as possible (i.e. no dxdvk unless unplayable without).

I will make note of steam/proton compatibility if using the methods above leaves a distinguishable difference between the two.

If you have compatibility notes or are playing games with compatibility tools outside steam I would love to have you contribute to this wiki.'

Scoring System

This wiki scores games by two categories: playability, and tweak effort. Each category is divided into three sub-categories.

  • Playability - how well the game runs after tweaks.
    1. Platinum (P): After tweaks, game runs flawlessly.
    2. Gold (G): After tweaks, game runs well with small degradation or issues.
    3. Coal (C): Even with tweaks, game suffers from major issues.
  • Tweak Effort - how much effort tweaks take.
    1. None (N): Setting up a prefix is all that is needed.
    2. Minimal (M): Some tweaking via winecfg is needed.
    3. Involved (I): Tweaking with winecfg is a must. System packages may need to be installed.
    4. Hellish (H): You need to build custom tools to run the game (i.e. dxdvk).

Each rating has a single character representation that can be use to quickly reference compatibility in the listing below. Please also note that the names themselves don't actually describe the process of tweaking. A 'Hellish' tweak may not be too difficult given you know what to install. It is simply a indicator of how much stuff you have to add on top of wine to get a game running well.
